Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack Russell terrier is a muscular-bodied small-sized dog; they are white with black or tan markings and have small V-shaped ears. This breed is considered a true working terrier and was named after John “Jack” Russell, a dog breeder from the United Kingdom.

The Jack Russell Terrier grew in popularity during the 1900s; during this century, though, the breed actually began to be known as three distinct (yet virtually identical) breeds in different parts of the world: the Russell, the Parson, and the original Jack Russell. One main difference between the Parson Russell Terrier and Russell Terrier is their size. Parson Russell Terriers typically stand 12-15 inches in height, while Russell Terriers are slightly shorter at 10-12 inches. Some people identify these dogs by describing Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers as variants of the Jack Russell Terrier.

The Kennel Club lists the characteristics of a Jack Russell Terrier as: “a strong, active, lithe, working terrier of great character with flexible body of medium length. Smart movement. Keen expression. The coat is predominately white, and may be smooth, broken or rough.”
Many other variants of this type exist, such as the Russell Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier and Rat Terrier, with many locally developed purebred dog breeds.
